4 Easy Ways To Improve The Efficiency Of Your Company Vehicles Today
We wrote a blog post in the past called Six Tips For Green Fleet Management, but what if you don’t have a “fleet” per se? What if you just want to know how to make your one or few company vehicles more efficient? The same tips apply from the previous post, so feel free to read it, but we have also collected 4 easy ways to improve the efficiency of your company vehicles.
#1. Match a vehicle to a job
If an employee is just driving from point A to point B, then give them a car rather than a 2wd or 4wd truck or SUV. This saves gas simply by driving a different vehicle. Reserve 2wd trucks for towing and hauling heavy or large items. Only use 4wd trucks for tasks when an employee will be driving off-road or in inclement weather.
#2. Load the vehicle with fewer items
The more items a vehicle carries, the heavier it is and the more gas it uses. The aerodynamics of the vehicle also affect gas mileage. If you won’t be using that heavy tool today, don’t haul it. If you don’t need a rack or ladder, don’t load it on top of the vehicle.
#3. Drive more efficiently
Exceeding the speed limit, abrupt acceleration, and hard braking all use excess gas. You and your employees can improve driving behaviors to make the most of the gas you are putting in your vehicle. So, build a habit of smooth driving, and encourage your employees to do the same.
#4. Limit idling
A car uses unnecessary gas to idle. If you are stuck in a traffic jam, turn the vehicle off. The rest of the time, try to find a route with fewer intersections or with intersections whose lights change faster (we all know where these are in a town we travel through frequently).
You may notice that these tips all require no financial investment. So, you can improve the sustainability of your business today and save money tomorrow.
