Earth Day: Protecting the Planet Starts with Us
This April 22 is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.
Looking back to the early 1970s, public awareness of the human impact on the environment was growing. The leadership of U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, known at the time as a national environmental figure, led to the adoption of conservation laws protecting clean air, clean water, and endangered species. Including the establishment of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the annual recognition of Earth Day each April.
Today we know that environmental protection activities, led by individuals and organizations, can have a lasting impact on our communities. According to the EPA, over the last 50 years, all environmental indicators across the nation have improved. As we celebrate our historical environmental wins, we must continue to address current climate challenges.
― Gaylord Nelson
“Our goal is not just an environment of clean air and water and scenic beauty. The objective is an environment of decency, quality and mutual respect for all other human beings and all other living creatures.”

Even if we aren’t able to participate in an official Earth Day event this year, you can spend your day conserving energy at home. Together, we can leverage the power of our collective reach to inspire others to take action.
50 years later, we must remember that a small change today can add up over time!
